China is a large, old and complex country about which foreigners are often not as knowledgeable as they might be and should be. In this session, Bruce Stening will set about painting a broad picture of China, discussing both the realities and myths about the country. The focus will be on helping participants achieve a basic understanding of what makes the country 'tick', the challenges that it confronts and how it is seeking to meet those challenges.

Managing the dragon
In this session Jack Perkowski will discuss the opportunities and obstacles that confront foreign firms and foreign individuals when doing business in and with China. Again, he will provide a broad picture, illustrating his points by reference to many real and contemporary examples.
Founder of JFP Holdings
Jack Perkowski is a Wall Street veteran, author, and the founder and Managing Partner of JFP Holdings, Ltd. He is also the former CEO and Chairman of the Board of ASIMCO Technologies, an automotive components company in China. In 2008, he was named one of "30 Outstanding Entrepreneurs in China's Auto Components Industry Over the Country's 30 Years of Economic Reform," by China Auto News, the only foreigner to receive such distinction.
Economic development of China & China's current economic policies
Is the high speed of China's economic growth sustainable? What is the underpinning guidance for China's reforms within two decades? What is the trend of China's economic development? And what are the key components of China's comparative and competitive advantages? Besides, what are the bases for Chinese political stability and policy directions in the days ahead?

Finance for non-financial managers
The goal of the financial management session is to make laymen in accounting familiar with the terminology of the financial departments. Participants will gain an insight into the financial situation of their own company (by means of the income statement) and into the factors that influence the profits and cash flow. Furthermore, they will learn how the company is financed and what kind of influence operational decisions have on the financial result.
In order to present this technical subject in a didactical and meaningful way, Vlerick has developed a simulation game called FAST - Finance and Accounting Simulation Tool. Step by step the participants will learn more about the financial dynamics of a commercial business, from the foundation of the firm, investments in machines and buildings, the hiring of staff, the purchasing of raw materials and services, to a first production cycle. The basic elements of the balance sheet and the income statement (profit-and-loss statement) are also explained. Participants have then to act out what happens in a second production cycle and afterwards, by reporting on three aspects of this cycle: the financial situation, the opening and closing balance and the income statement of the second production cycle. As we go on, we will enter at length into the underlying relations and dynamics (e.g. the effect of deferred payments on return and liquidity).

Globalization has brought us all to a more level playground than ever before. Interconnectedness and interactions between individuals, organizations and nations are common and increasing in global business. However, identifying and, more importantly, addressing cultural differences across national boundaries, is one of the most challenging issues faced by global leaders today.
Cross-cultural Management is a seminar that introduces to its participants an understanding of what constitutes effective management practices across cultures. The underlying theme is that the skills and behaviours are perceived as effective management characteristics in one culture may not necessarily be perceived so in a different cultural context. Through mini case studies, lectures and group discussions we will explore the ways in which specific attitudes, behaviours and management styles are valued differently by different cultures. At the end of the session, seminar participants will have acquired practical frameworks to prepare for taking on the challenge of assignments in cultures other than his/her own.
